Top cop on poll roll
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is more popular in this city than just about any other government figure, including President Obama.
Despite the NYPD’s well-publicized clashes with the Wall Street protesters, Kelly scored an enviable job-approval rating of 66 percent positive and only 24 percent negative in the latest Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday.
That was down from his lofty 67-17 percent showing in July, but still higher than any other official named in the survey.
By comparison, Obama’s popularity stood at 62-33 percent in the overwhelmingly Democratic city.
Mayor Bloomberg was struggling to regain his political footing with a 47-42 percent performance grade, down sharply from 54-35 percent following the city’s near-perfect response to Tropical Storm Irene.
For Kelly, the numbers were almost all upbeat.
If he decided to get into the mayoral race for 2013 — and he’s repeatedly said he wouldn’t — Kelly would be the immediate front-runner.
