Brooklyn turned downright biblical Wednesday when a torrential downpour caused waist-deep floodwaters on streets like this one.

The brief but intense storm quickly overwhelmed Gowanus’ age-old storm drains, which belched out sewage that combined with rainwater on Ninth Street, off of Smith Street.

“It smells like sewage. It is pretty gross,” said Josh Napaoli, 27, who pedaled his bike through the sickening slurry. “People shouldn’t drive through it and if they do, they should wash their cars.”

The temporary river became so deep that a white Lexus got stuck in four feet of water at around noon.

“Water got into the engine and it stalled,” said Chris Szwaba, 38, who works for Platinum Towing. “The floors were completely wet.

The storm dumped about an inch of rain on the neighborhood in about half an hour, according to AccuWeather. Manhattan was mostly spared, with only two-tenths of an inch of rain falling in Central Park.
