Truants getting mentors
A new city initiative aims to get the 240,000 kids who missed a month or more of public school last year back into the classroom.
The pilot program will pair 1,500 truant-prone students in 25 schools with volunteer mentors for the school year and feature an outreach campaign directed at students’ families.
“Students [who] develop relationships with someone at school are much more likely to come in,” one Bronx principal explained.
