Trump Place fire
Eleven people were hurt, including a firefighter, when a smoky blaze broke out yesterday at the 42-story Trump Place on the Upper West Side, fire officials said.
The fire was contained to a single third-floor apartment, but had neighbors running for their lives as thick smoke poured into the hallways of several upper floors at 180 Riverside Blvd. at 5 a.m.
“Smoke was everywhere. We were all choking,” said Oscar Gonzalez, 51, who raced outside with his wife Arlene, 49, daughter Arielle, 15, and Maltese poodle Peanut after a cop knocked on his fourth-floor apartment door.
Gonzalez said more people could have been hurt if not for the unidentified cop.
“That kid knocked on everybody’s door and got everybody out. There was a lot of heavy smoke in the hallways, and he knocked on all the doors. He put himself on the line,” he said.
The blaze started in apartment 3V, and an unidentified 39-year-old woman who lived there was taken to Cornell Medical Center in serious condition from smoke inhalation. Nine other residents suffered minor injuries.
