Tunnel to Towers run
This Sunday, New Yorkers can run in the footsteps of a true city hero.
Some 30,000 participants are expected to take part in the 11th annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5k Run/Walk, a charity event that will make its way from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to a finish across from the World Trade Center.
The route traces the path Siller, an FDNY firefighter, took on 9/11, when he bravely ran with 60 pounds of gear from Brooklyn to the Twin Towers, where he helped rescue people until they collapsed and he died.
He left behind a wife and five children.
A foundation named in Siller’s honor helps service members who have been seriously injured in the line of duty.
Participants from around the world will attend the event, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Gowanus approach to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.
To register, go to the Web site T2TRun.org.
The event will include a free concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.
