ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo announced yesterday that two state prisons in the city with over 500 employees would close as part of a long-expected statewide consolidation program.

The closing of the Arthur Kill medium-security facility on Staten Island and the minimum-security Fulton Work Release Facility in The Bronx, along with five upstate prisons, will save the state $72 million in the current fiscal year and $112 million in the fiscal year beginning next April 1, Cuomo said.

A total of 1,531 employees will be displaced by the closings, although a Correctional Services Department spokesman said most, if not all, will be hired at other prison facilities.

Inmates from the closed facilities will be transferred to other prisons.
