Two people have been killed after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island.
The two-seater, identified as a factory Sling, smashed into a remote area on the south side of the island just after midday.
The single-engine aircraft was reportedly last spotted near Salta Verde Point. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said the two people on board were pronounced dead at the scene.

“I am grateful to our paramedics and Sheriff’s deputies who quickly reached this remote area and are handling this incident with professionalism and care.”
LAFD said: “DOWNED AIRCRAFT | #Catalina l At approx. 12:23 p.m., #LACoFD units responded to a report of an aircraft emergency.
“Upon arrival, crews found a crashed single engine plane with two fatalities.” The NTSB and FAA have launched investigations.
The Catalina Island Conservancy, which oversees wildlife and lands on the island, confirmed in a Facebook post that the plane went down southwest of the city of Avalon, per the weekly Catalina Island newspaper the Catalina Islander.

“We are working closely with responding agencies who are leading the investigation and response. The Conservancy’s primary role at this time is to support access and logistics as needed by emergency responders.”
The statement added, “To support the investigation, nearby roads and hiking trails, including Garden to Sky trail are temporarily closed.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Matthew King told the Orange County Register that the plane wound up in a ravine on the south side of the island.
