NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Authorities say two western New York teenagers have been charged with beating a 46-year-old man to death with a golf club during what police describe as a drug deal gone bad.

Niagara Falls police say 17-year-old James Hardeman Jr. and 19-year-old Gary Llamas III, both of Niagara Falls, were arrested late Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder.

Police say the two men are accused of using a putter to beat John Smith in an alley near his home late Monday night. Authorities say Smith was struck in the head several times and died Tuesday night at a Buffalo hospital.

Police say Smith was a Chicago native who lived in Niagara Falls for less than a year.

Hardeman and Llamas are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in city court.
