Two women are dead after a fire raced through their home in Suffolk County early Monday morning, police officials said.

A resident of 86 Sinn St. in Patchogue discovered the burning house when he returned home around 1:30 a.m., according to Suffolk County police.

He called 911 but when officers tried to enter through the front door, they were forced back by flames.

Patrol Sgt. Michael Guerrisi and police officers Taylor Herbst and William Boyd went through the basement, where they found a 47-year-old man asleep. He was rescued and transported to Long Island Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Herbst, meanwhile, sustained a back injury during the rescue and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the women were found inside the home once the fire was extinguished. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their names are being withheld pending family notification.

The fire is not considered suspicious, according to a preliminary investigation by arson detectives.
