British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife paid their respects Thursday to the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks during a trip to New York’s Ground Zero.

The solemn stop came on the third day of the couple’s official visit to the US, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg accompanying them to the site of the World Trade Center attacks.

They were taken to an observation point overlooking the memorial site and then to the edge of the two square reflecting pools which form its centerpiece.

The memorial plaza’s design is called ‘Reflecting Absence’. Two vast square holes are sunk into the ground where the Twin Towers once stood.

Down their sides, water cascades with a deafening roar. Atop the waterfalls, bronze parapets are etched with the names of the almost three thousand who died here, at the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa.

The visit is likely to bring back powerful personal memories for the couple.

Samantha Cameron was in New York on 9/11, two months pregnant. Her husband described recently how he spent five agonizing hours trying to reach her that day.

The New York visits comes after two days in Washington where the couple were hosted by President Barack Obama and his wife.

The UK prime minister also met with Newark mayor Corey Booker early Thursday and took a walking tour of downtown Newark, the Star-Ledger newspaper reported.

Cameron is scheduled to meet with students at New York University for a question and answer session later today.
