United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon formally asked the Security Council to support his candidacy for a second five-year term, according to a letter obtained by Reuters yesterday.

Ban, whose first term ends Dec. 31, already had received assurances of support from the United States and the council, diplomats said, making his re-election all but certain. He is unopposed so far.
