Union kin in $2.4M ‘extort’
Three relatives who control a Brooklyn-based labor union were busted yesterday on charges they pocketed more than $2.4 million through a long-running extortion and theft scheme.
Founding President Anthony Fazio Sr., current President Anthony Fazio Jr. and Secretary/Treasurer John Fazio Jr. allegedly strong-armed more than a dozen businesses by threatening “possible labor disruptions” by members of Local 348-S of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
Anthony Sr. and John also ripped off union funds by submitting “fraudulent invoices for non-existent goods,” according to the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office.
According to its Web site, the union’s membership includes delivery workers for the FreshDirect online grocery store.
