SYRACUSE — An Indian car company has chosen upstate New York for a factory to build electric cars for North America.
A state official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Reva Electric Car Co. will work with Bannon Automotive, a new electric-car company based in Freeport, LI, to assemble a three-door, plug-in hatchback — called the NXR — in the town of Clay, a suburb of Syracuse.
The official said the state is providing a $6.76 million package of grants and tax incentives.
The plant is expected to open next year, with an initial work force of 100 that would grow to 250 over three years.
A news conference to announce the plant is scheduled for this afternoon. It will be attended by Gov. Paterson and Sen. Charles Schumer.
