A man’s body was found after getting swept away by a powerful flash flood in upstate New York, police said Friday.

The unidentified man had gotten out of his stuck vehicle on Military Road in the town of Norway around 10 p.m. Thursday, when he became lost in the floodwater, according to a spokesperson from the Herkimer County Police Department.

“He was in an area that was experiencing extreme flooding,” the spokesperson said.

His body was found late Friday morning, according to police.

A young girl was also seriously injured in New Rochelle after a tree fell on her during Thursday’s storm, according to officials.

Earlier today, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a state of emergency in 11 counties, including Herkimer.

“There’s going to be a lot of debris to clean up afterward, many of the homes are going to be uninhabitable,” he said in a statement.

Cuomo plans to place 200 National Guard troops in the affected areas.

There were more than 241,000 power outages reported statewide and nearly 60 road closures in the aftermath of Thursday’s storm, according to the Governor’s Office.
