An upstate New York church faced backlash after it held an assault rifle giveaway during its weekly service.

Grace Baptist Church in Troy drew protesters Sunday morning with its flyers to “WIN A FREE AR-15,” news station WRGB reported.

“It’s extreme poor taste, the time that they decided to raffle off a rifle when we have all of the shootings going on in all of our communities,” protester Steven Negron told the outlet.

“An AR-15 is completely unnecessary in this community. Even as a hunting rifle I mean that’s not really the type of rifle used to hunt.”

Pastor John Koletas said the church held the giveaway to honor hunters and gun owners who have “been so viciously attacked by anti-Christian socialist policies,” news station WNYT reported.

The church had previously raffled off assault rifles, hosting giveaways at least twice before in 2014 and again in 2017, WRGB reported. And the house of worship plans to hold on Monday another AR-15 raffle.

The church didn’t respond to request for comment, WRGB reported.
