The police officer stopped to investigate upon feeling an impact, and identified a man in his early 20s, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The student was transported a hospital but passed away at about 3:35 a.m.

“The University of San Diego campus community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students who was struck early this morning by a vehicle near the campus.

“Out of respect for the family, the university will not release the student’s identity at this time,” the university said in a statement to News 8.

One student told NBC7 that other students often risk crossing that area of the street due to the absence of a marked crosswalk connecting to the main campus road.

Investigations are underway on why the student entered the roadway and if the man had been hit by the patrol car first or been struck prior to the vehicle hitting him.

The student’s personal information has been withheld and anyone with information on the accident was asked to contact police at 858-495-7800.
