A proposal to rename an athletic complex after former Nassau County Republican chairman Joe Mondello was pulled Monday following opposition from veterans groups.
The sports facility in Levittown is now called MacLaren Memorial Stadium and Field, honoring World War II Navy vet and purple heart recipient Ernest Hamilton MacLaren.
Mondello, 80, was recently confirmed as President Trump’s US ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago.
He also served as the Town of Hempstead’s presiding supervisor from 1987 to 1993 and was a town councilman.
Republicans, who hold a 5-2 majority on the town board, drafted the resolution to rename a portion of the sports facility as the “Ambassador Joseph N. Mondello Athletic Complex.”
But new Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen, the first Democrat elected to the post in a century, opposed the renaming as unseemly and a slight to a war hero.
Many Republicans owe their appointments to Mondello.
“I respectfully disagree with this action, which could possibly diminish the memory of a veteran who proudly served our nation during World War II and then returned home and continued his service to our community,” Gillen said.
Members of veterans groups also expressed their opposition.
At Mondello’s request, Hempstead Town Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr., who represents the Levittown area, said he was withdrawing the resolution.
“I am a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Honoring the defenders of our nation’s freedom is something about which I feel strongly. I also would never wish to diminish the legacy of a brave veteran, such as Earnest MacLaren, for whom a Levittown recreation facility has been named,” Dunne said.
“What’s more, Ambassador Mondello has indicated that he does not wish to have a portion of the facility named in his honor. Accordingly, I am withdrawing a resolution to rename a portion of the MacLaren facility for the ambassador.”
