Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden is set to cruise to an easy victory in New York state over former Big Apple resident President Trump, capturing its haul of 29 electoral votes for his White House bid.
The Associated Press, NBC and CNN quickly projected that New York would end up in Biden’s column shortly after polls closed across the state at 9 p.m.
However, the final results of the race will likely not be known for days.
Across the state, more than 2.5 million New Yorkers requested mail-in ballots for the November races, skipping the polls and potential exposure to the coronavirus as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage. By state law, absentee ballots cannot be counted until after Election Day.
This piece of the 2020 presidential contest was never expected to be close: Both men spent their energies and funds campaigning elsewhere, and the networks called the race within minutes of the polls closing.
The most recent widely respected survey from Siena College, which dates to October, found that Biden outpolled Trump by 61 to 29 percent, a 32-point margin.

Biden’s victory here comes nearly five months after he overwhelmingly won the state’s Democratic primary in June.
