Later clips showed cops swoop and pin a man to the ground near a parking lot as two men in their 20s were rushed to hospital.

The violence erupted around 3:32 p.m. near Third Street and Pine Avenue as crowds came out for the highly-anticipated launch of Marathon Burger, the fast food chain founded by Hussle’s estate.

The Long Beach Police Department confirmed multiple people were injured and there was one fatality. The motive, circumstances of the shooting and suspect information remain under investigation, officials said.

Cops said: “Officers responded and saw a male adult victim with a gunshot wound. Officers rendered medical aid until relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel, who transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.”

The Long Beach outpost was opened in partnership with the Broadus family — including rap legend Snoop Dogg — who came out for the opening.

Casey Parker, who represents Marathon Burger, told Fox 11 Los Angeles that the shooting had no ties to the grand opening. “It wasn’t related to the restaurant at all. People were eating ice cream and playing basketball games,” he said. Additionally, Parker said that organizers had security, street closures and a police presence.

One other witness told FOX 11 that there were tensions brewing between some groups. “Eventually there’s going to be something when you have different gangs coming into your neighborhood. That’s what transpired tonight,” the man claimed.

Despite the violence, Marathon Burger’s fourth location stayed open throughout the day. They posted on their social media showing off the great turnout.

Hussle, who’s birth name is Ermias Asghedom, became a respected rapper, entrepreneur and community leader in South Los Angeles, building a following through a series of mixtapes, including the acclaimed “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name” series. His 2018 debut studio album, Victory Lap, earned a Grammy nomination.

Beyond music, he invested heavily in his Crenshaw neighborhood, opening Marathon Clothing and supporting STEM programs and economic development initiatives aimed at empowering underserved communities.

On March 31, 2019, Hussle was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles. He was 33. His death sparked an outpouring of grief worldwide, with thousands attending a memorial at the then-Staples Center, honoring his legacy of resilience and community activism.

After Hussle’s death, his brother, Samiel Asghedom, took an active role in preserving his legacy. Known as “Blacc Sam,” he continued operating The Marathon brand, organized memorial efforts, and carried forward community initiatives in South Los Angeles.
