Disturbing new surveillance footage shows an undercover New Jersey cop opening fire on an unarmed black man in Newark on New Year’s Day, killing him.
The nearly two-minute clip captures 39-year-old Carl Dorsey III running and slamming into Detective Rod Simpkins as he exits the unmarked police SUV near Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street just after midnight.
The cop then pulls his 9mm service weapon and fires a single shot while falling backward.
Dorsey, of South Orange, is then seen tumbling over a parked car while three other Newark cops get out of the police SUV.
No firearm was found on Dorsey, who died at University Hospital just after 1:30 a.m., cops said.
The clip, which appears to be from a security camera on a house across the street and has no audio, was released by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office on Thursday and is the only video evidence in the shooting.
A screengrab from surveillance footage of the shooting shows Simpkins firing his gun at the man. New Jersey Office of the Attorney GeneralThe footage only captures a portion of the encounter, starting when the unmarked police SUV stops in the middle of the street and Dorsey sprints into view from out of frame.
According to NJ.com, the cops were responding to shots fired in the area.
Neither plainclothes cops nor the undercover SUV were equipped with cameras.
Simpkins has since been placed on administrative leave.
Another man, Jamar Murphy, was arrested near the police shooting on weapons charges, according to NJ.com. It was unclear if Murphy had any connection to Dorsey.
