New York state voters overwhelmingly support increasing the number of charter schools to help win $700 million in federal education funds, according to a poll.

By a nearly 3-to-1 margin, respondents with an opinion said the Assembly should pass legislation approved by the Senate that would raise the cap on charter schools from 200 to 460 in order to qualify for federal Race to the Top funding by the June 1 deadline.

Of the 1,250 people queried by the survey — commissioned by the pro-charter group Education Reform Now last week — 63 percent said the Assembly should pass the charter bill.
