Opponents of a proposed New York City Walmart stepped up their fight against the super-store yesterday, importing workers from out of town to dish dirt.

With horror stories of wage-stealing, fear and humiliation, the current and former workers told a City Council committee that the lower prices typically synonymous with Walmart come at too high a price for its workers and neighbors.

“People need jobs, but they need good, sustainable jobs,” said Sandra Carpenter, a former Laurel, Md., Walmart worker who said she was fired after she began to advise other workers of their rights.
