Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani says he has both terrible and wonderful memories in connection to the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Giuliani — dubbed “America’s Mayor” after the attacks — said the terrible memories were of all the people he lost.

The good memories were of the heroism he witnessed in the aftermath of that day. He said the overwhelming number of volunteers “lifted his spirits.”

“It’s a little scaled back but I think that’s appropriate. It’s a very solemn ceremony,” Giuliani said.

“I believe most Americans realize that we can never forget. We can’t forget the heroism and the bravery but we also can’t forget the struggle is still going on. It’s not like Pearl Harbor. The same people that did this are still trying to kill us. Islamic extremist terrorists are at war with us.”

Giuliani also admires New Yorkers’ resilience. He says twice as many people live downtown as before Sept. 11 and the number of businesses is up by 10 to 30 percent.

He said New York City is still a target but New Yorkers “don’t let it stop their lives.”
