It’s the ultimate city makeover.

Officials gave their first tour yesterday of an ongoing $119 million renovation-in-progress of City Hall’s East Wing, scheduled to be completed next March in time to celebrate the historic structure’s second centennial.

For many, it was an eye-popping experience. Spaces that had served as City Council offices were stripped to the bare walls, in many cases to the original stones from 1812.

The crumbling ceiling in the ornate second-floor council chambers had to be entirely replastered, but only after five 1905 murals were carefully removed for restoration.

An entirely new sub-basement as large as a three-bedroom apartment was constructed to house new electrical equipment.

At a time of budget deficits and service cuts, officials are concerned the renovation will be viewed as unnecessary.

But “it got to the point where someone was going to get hurt,” said one official.
