What’s in a name? $1M
Mayor Bloomberg will soon get to find out how far $1 million goes in Lancaster, Pa., when he delivers the commencement address at Franklin & Marshall College.
The mayor is scheduled to address graduates of the small liberal- arts school on May 12, when he’ll also get a chance to see the $16 million center for business, government and public policy that opened in 2010 and is named after his top aide, First Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris.
Bloomberg donated at least $1 million to secure the naming rights.
Harris, a 1977 grad, has described the gift as the “supreme honor” of her life. Harris also serves as chair of the mayor’s family foundation.
She is among the highest-paid individuals in the administration, with an annual salary of $245,760. In the 2009 mayoral race, Harris took a two-month leave of absence from her government post to work in the mayor’s campaign and was paid $451,000, which included a $400,000 bonus.
Bloomberg is to receive an honorary degree at the ceremony.
