The widows of two slain NYPD cops got a standing ovation Wednesday morning at a ceremony marking the receipt of more than $1 million in pledges to pay off their mortgages and help them rebuild their shattered lives.
“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who gave during this difficult time,” said Pei Xia Chen, whose newlywed husband, Wenjian Liu, was gunned down Dec. 20 in Brooklyn.
“Words cannot express the appreciation that is in my heart. Thank you very much.”
The sister of Rafael Ramos, who was assassinated along with Liu as they sat in a patrol car, spoke for his widow, Maritza.
“The New York Police Department has been amazing. The love and support from you guys is overwhelming. There aren’t any words to express the gratitude that my sister-in-law and I have,” Cindy Ramos told the crowd at the Conrad New York Hotel in Battery Park City.
The money was raised by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which sponsors an annual 5K run for charity and was established in the memory of firefighter Stephen Siller, who was killed in the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center.

“What these letters say are: We are going to pay off your mortgages immediately,” Siller said.
“We know that (the pain) never goes away. You still can have a good life if you turn it around and do something good with it.”
Ex-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who donated $20,000, said: “We owe them this money that we gave them.”
“Maybe now they can have a little less pain and also an understanding that we love them,” he said.
Giuliani, who got a standing ovation and cheers, also lavished praise on the NYPD and took a shot at the anti-cop protesters who have been roiling the city over the police chokehold death of Eric Garner on Staten Island.
“The New York Police Department is the finest law enforcement agency in the United States,” he said.
“You are the top of the profession. Anybody who says the opposite is either jealous or misinformed. They don’t know what they’re talking about.”
NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Ben Tucker told the widows: “You are part of the larger family of the NYPD forever and ever, it’s never gonna change.”
The foundation initially sought to raise $800,000, but was flooded with donations, including $10,000 from former Florida Gov. and likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.
The payout is expected to take place Jan. 15.
