Mayor de Blasio said Friday that he hopes to run for a new office when his term at City Hall expires in 2021.

“I intend to continue in elected office if there is an opportunity to do so, but my focus is on being mayor of the city for the next three years and two months,” de Blasio said on WNYC radio, speaking from Puerto Rico.

The response came to a question about whether he might run for president in 2020. He said that’s not in the cards right now because he’s committed to completing his second term as mayor.

Among the possible openings in 2022 is the governor’s office — unless Gov. Cuomo seeks a fourth term.

De Blasio was in San Juan with his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, to take part in the annual post-election conference of New York Democrats and to announce a $100,000 donation to two medical centers in Puerto Rico from The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City.
