A powerful wind-driven storm knocked out power for thousands across the tri-state area and sparked tornado warnings to be briefly issued in several counties.
Tornado warnings were issued Sunday night in New York, Bronx, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Bergen and Fairfield counties — though they had all expired by 10 p.m., according to alerts issued by the National Weather Service.
Wild footage posted by Twitter user @MichaelWilliamG, taken at 10th Avenue and 42nd Street in Hudson Yards, shows leaves and other debris rapidly flying through the air.
“Wow! Apparently I just survived my first NYC Tornado,” he captioned the video.
Another photo posted by the NYPD’s 43rd Precinct in the Bronx shows a cop moving a fallen gate from a construction site out of the street.
“Tornado watch with high winds as our resident SupermanMan Police Officer Delfa gets a quick shoulder workout moving a fallen gate off the road,” the tweet said. “Safe Sunday all.”
Though the National Weather Service has not released any statements or official reports of a tornado touchdown, it was expected to inspect the area for signs of damage early Monday, according to NBC News.
The tornado warning was first issued after some indication of rotation in the clouds near Fort Lee, NJ, indicated a tornado could be generated, the network reported.
In the past 24 hours, 15,532 customers were out of service across New York City and Westchester County due to the storm, according to Con Edison.
By around 9:30 a.m. Monday, the number had dwindled to 179 outages affecting 3,334 customers.
Across the tri-state area, about 101,000 customers were without power as a result of the storm, NBC 4 New York reported.
Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm also battered Cleveland, Ohio — right at the start of the game between the Cleveland Browns and the Houston Texans, which had to be delayed.
In a clip posted by a spectator, the wind picked up as people stood for the national anthem.
And in downtown Toronto, Canada, a windstorm sent large pieces of debris flying through the air, video shows.
“This is seriously dangerous!!” one person tweeted. “Boards flying everywhere, landing on the street and crashing into houses. Be careful near Yonge and Wellesley!”
