A 24-year-old Canadian woman checked two suitcases at JFK Airport that were stuffed with about 38 pounds of marijuana, two disassembled .40 caliber semi-automatic weapons and 350 pounds of ammunition — and cops busted her before she was able to board a flight to Barbados, sources said.
Nyesha McPherson, of Ontario, was arrested at about 9 a.m. Sunday, before she boarded a Jet Blue flight from JFK Airport to Barbados with her cache of drugs, guns and ammo, the sources said.
The contraband was hidden among cans and boxes of baby wipes, coffee, floor dusting sheets; lemonade mix; ice tea mix; a box of cat litter and a box of laundry tablets, according to a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
Nyesha McPhersonShe was nabbed after JFK Airport screeners for the Transportation Security Administration using a CTX device – an acronym for Computer Tomography X-ray, which provides a picture of what’s inside passengers’ checked luggage – responded to an alarm that sounded over her second bag, indicating it might contain contraband, officials said.
The CTX device revealed a picture showing what appeared to be metal inside a powdered drink container — and a further check indicated the container was “heavy.”
Inside were the parts of the two handguns; 13 bags of a “green leafy substance” that turned out to be marijuana; three “high-capacity” magaines; a 10-round magazine and 200 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a source said.
The discovery prompted officials to search her first bag, which had already been stowed on the aircraft without any indication it contained anything illegal, sources said.
A further check revealed that the first bag contained an additional 47 bags of the “green leafy substance” and 150 more rounds of ammunition.
It was not immediately clear why TSA screening failed to detect the drugs and ammo in the first bag.
McPherson was charged with criminal possession of marijuana; a weapon; a firearm; ammunition and high capacity magazines and was due to be arraigned in Queens Criminal Court.
