A horrifying accident took place Wednesday as a young woman was run over by a pickup truck driven by a lifeguard at Half Moon Bay Beach.

The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. at Francis Beach — the main stretch of Half Moon Bay State Beach — where the 20-year-old woman was lying on the sand when the truck rolled over her.

“We saw that they were digging out a woman who had gotten run over. It’s awful that she got run over… Hopefully it was just an accident,” one woman who witnessed the accident told KTVU.

The lifeguard on duty, a seasonal employee, was allegedly distracted during the accident, and the woman was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case according to the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office. The department is still investigating the matter.

“The woman was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to a local hospital…Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time,” California State Parks spokesperson Adeline Yee said.

Just last year, an accident at Cowell Ranch State Beach, a few miles south of Francis Beach, saw a 39-year-old man and an 8-year-old boy die after being swept by the ocean waves.

Francis Beach is popular amongst campers and serves as a campground that “hosts tent and RV camping with sites offering electric hookup or dry camping,” according to California State Parks.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident.
