Emergency workers hoisted a worker out of a 30-foot shaft with a crane near Penn Station Wednesday morning after the man complained of chest pains.
EMS didn’t want to risk bringing the man up the stairs when the call came in just before 9 a.m., fire officials said.
So quick-thinking responders found a street-level shaft and tapped a crane worker already on scene to help lift the man out for medical treatment, the FDNY said. It is unclear what he was working on below street level.
He was taken to New York University Hospital where he is in stable condition.
