A construction crew made a ghoulish find while digging a hole in the East Village, police sources said Monday.

The workers were more than a dozen feet underground at 32 Second Avenue around 2 p.m. Friday when they found what looked like a human skull.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner examined their find and determined the skull was indeed human, the sources said.

The land previously held a jail as well as a cemetery, according to the sources.

The Anthology Film Archives is currently located at the address.

The owners of the building applied for a permit in January to construct a new fourth floor with a penthouse and enlarge the floor area in the basement of the brick building, city Department of Buildings records show.
