A Staten Island man has been charged with animal cruelty for killing his roommate’s eight-month-old Yorkshire Terrier while drunk last May.

Michael McNicholas kicked the puppy, named “Banana,” down the stairs of his apartment and into a wall last month, according to law enforcement sources.

“Those who do harm to defenseless animals must be held accountable,” Staten Island DA Michael E. McMahon said.

“My office will continue to vigorously prosecute animal abusers and seek justice for these vulnerable victims.”

Banana was taken to the South Shore Animal Hospital on May 18 with severe injuries including traumatic brain injury, hemorrhaging in the eyes, and a rib and hip fracture.

The puppy was euthanized.

McNicholas was released on $1,000 bail Wednesday.
