A would-be carjacker is in critical condition after losing control of the Honda Accord he was allegedly stealing and slamming it into a New York City ambulance, sources said.

The man jumped into a double-parked Honda Accord near W. 175th Street and Amsterdam Avenue and pepper-sprayed the person sitting inside, cops said.

The passenger jumped out of the car and ran.

The 28-year-old man then sped south down Amsterdam Avenue, but lost control of the vehicle and smashed into an unoccupied FDNY ambulance parked near W. 173rd Street, police said.

The suspect suffered a head injury in the crash. He was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Police did not identify the man because he had not yet been arrested.

It was not immediately clear how much damage the ambulance sustained.
