WWI NYer Purple Heart
The family of a World War I veteran from Brooklyn has been given a Purple Heart medal 95 years after he was wounded in battle.
US Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) delivered the honor to descendants of Cpl. William Tiebout at a touching ceremony Friday in upstate Newburgh. The Brooklyn-born Tiebout served in World War I as an Army corporal.
He was wounded in the legs by shrapnel during a battle in Belgium and again by a German airplane strafing his hospital.
Tiebout died in 1977.
