Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, fresh from an ill-timed trip to Uganda, avoided questions after meeting with the family of slain NYPD Officer Didarul Islam on Wednesday morning.

Mamdani spent an hour in Islam’s family home in the Bronx — two days after the senseless mass shooting that left the 36-year-old married officer dead.

The socialist pol — who, if elected, has vowed to “disband” the elite police unit that responded to the Midtown mayhem on Monday — quickly hopped from an unmarked NYPD SUV with a big bouquet of flowers.

His campaign waved off The Post and other reporters during the visit, which followed the bloodshed by crazed gunman Shane Tamura, who killed the hero cop and three innocent civilians inside a Midtown skyscraper.

“We’re not really going to have a lot of time for many questions,” a Mamdani campaign worker said.

Mamdani hugged Islam’s family members as he left the home — and scowled at a Post photographer as he entered the SUV.

The mayoral front-runner, who spent the last several days in Uganda celebrating his recent wedding, faced a torrent of criticism for his tardy response to the shooting.

Mayor Eric Adams and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose independent mayoral runs are so far lagging way behind Mamdani’s, commented on the shooting about an hour after the massacre, as did Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Adams also met with Didarul’s family at the hospital later that night, and he and Gov. Kathy Hochul attended a “roll call” in Islam’s honor at the 47th Precinct.

Mamdani finally offered a tweet 45 minutes after his rivals, referring to the “NYPD officer in critical condition” – even though Islam was reported dead before then.

The 33-year-old Queens lawmaker finally followed up the next morning with a heartfelt tribute to Islam and his immigrant background as a Bangladeshi police officer, but by then critics were slamming Mamdani’s lack of experience, past “defund the police” stance and call to disband the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group that had responded to the Midtown massacre.

“When you start dismantling the pieces of the law enforcement apparatus that are specifically designed to carry out functions, that is extremely dangerous,” Adams said Wednesday on CNBC.

“It’s not an experiment, it’s experience.”

A Manhattan cop shook his head when he heard that Mamdani went to Islam’s house. 

“He’s telling everybody he wants to defund the police and then he goes and makes believe he cares about a cop’s family,” the cop said.

“He is already a seasoned politician.”

Islam, a dad of two, was the first NYPD officer to die in uniform since Jonathan Diller, a 31-year-old married new dad who was fatally shot in Queens in 2024.

A native of Bangladesh who served on the force for four years, Islam’s tragic death dealt a heavy blow to his family. 

The slain cop’s father grew so upset after learning of his son’s death that he suffered a stroke.

And Islam’s pregnant wife — who was supposed to go on a doctor’s appointment with her husband Tuesday — couldn’t even visit the hospital because she was so distraught, family members said.

Islam’s family members declined to comment immediately after their meeting with Mamdani.

Mamdani was expected to hold a news conference at 2 p.m. addressing the tragedy.
