You’ve got to be Kimmel-in me.

Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani on Monday pulled out of an ABC campaign town hall, blaming it on the network’s decision to suspend comedian Jimmy Kimmel – and asked to reschedule multiple hours after the late-night host was reinstated.

“I am withdrawing not as an indictment of the local affiliate or the hardworking journalists there, but rather in response to the corporate leaders who have put their bottom line ahead of their responsibility and upholding the freedom of the press,” Mamdani said at a news conference on Monday before the network announced the show would come back.

Mamdani’s protest led political insiders to jawbone that the increasingly debate-shy socialist had seized upon a “convenient excuse” to no-show.

“He’s clearly ducking more debates. He’s thinking, ‘I’ve got this in the bag, why risk it?’ His opponents need to make him pay for it,” said Republican strategist Bill O’Reilly.

Longtime Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf came to similar conclusions.

“Good excuse. When you’re as far ahead as the polls say you take no risks. Period,” he said.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was pulled from ABC “indefinitely” last week after a monologue in the wake of political pundit Charlie Kirk’s murder where he claimed the “MAGA gang” was doing everything they could to portray the alleged assassin as “anything other than one of them.”

Mamdani had pushed as a New York State Assembly member to cancel a Kirk speaking engagement with podcaster Candace Owens in New York City, labeling him a “far-right” extremist in 2023.

“Providing a platform for the kind of transphobic, bigoted views held by invited speakers Candace Owens, Charlie Kirk and others goes directly against the diversity and inclusivity that we hold dear as New Yorkers and is an insult to every member of our community,” a joint letter signed by progressive politicians, including Mamdani, said at the time.

New York Young Republican Club Policy Chairman Dovid Holtzman slammed the mayoral candidate’s about-face on cancel culture.

“After Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension last week, Mamdani’s sudden choice to reject the cancel culture he once endorsed means that New Yorkers are deprived of an opportunity to confront him about his own far-left beliefs,” Holtzman said. “Mamdani’s decision to pull the Biden Basement Strategy is just more evidence that New Yorkers must reject him at the ballot box.”

Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec said in an earlier statement that the ABC appearance was kiboshed to serve as a “political statement,” but did not clarify whether they would be rescheduling with the broadcaster after news broke of Kimmel’s show coming back on air.

The campaign previously indicated they would reschedule the town hall with another outlet.

Hours after it was confirmed that ABC would be bringing back the late-night show host and in the face of growing scrutiny, Mamdani said he reached out to the local affiliate to find a new date for the town hall.

“Last week, Disney/ABC caved to Trump administration pressure. Millions of Americans helped them find their backbone,” the mayoral candidate tweeted. “Whether you watch Jimmy Kimmel or not, today’s decision is a victory for free speech.”

“We’ve reached out to WABC to reschedule the town hall.”

Mamdani will also be participating in the two official general election debates – hosted by WNBC and NY1 in October – and has poured cold water on doing debates in all five boroughs, as challenged by independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi said he believed the decision to suspend Kimmel was a mistake, but he slammed Mamdani for running from the public.

“Since the primary, Mamdani has been running from reporters and refusing to answer direct questions on his past campaign pledge to decriminalize prostitution, his refusal to apologize for calling the NYPD racist and his vow to seize the means of production — i.e. abolish private property — among other deeply held beliefs that he’s trying to keep a lid on before election day,” he stated.

“He can’t word salad his way out of this one.”

Also appearing on the Nov. 4 election ballots are Republican Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent after skipping the June Democratic Party primary.

Mamdani won the June ranked-choice primary over a slew of candidates, including Cuomo.
