A Michigan hospital employee was shot by a co-worker in the hospital’s parking garage on Thursday morning, forcing a lockdown at the medical center as police frantically searched for the gunman.

The suspect fired off five shots in the parking garage at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital shortly after 7 a.m. in what police said was a “targeted incident between two employees of the hospital.”

The shooter, who has not yet been identified, was taken into custody without incident around 9:30 a.m. at a residence in nearby Macomb Township, police confirmed.

The victim, a 25-year-old man, was struck twice in the arm and his vehicle was also struck, Lt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department told reporters.

He was in stable condition and being treated at the hospital.

Troy Police Chief Josh Johnson said the pair used to be friends who recently had a “falling out.” Their roles at the hospital remained unclear.

“The victim was able to identify the suspect. So that’s how we were able to narrow that down,” Hancock said.

The shooting forced the large hospital into lockdown, with staff getting an active shooter alert instructing them to “take immediate personal safety measures and follow the run, hide, fight guidelines.”

Lamont Yoder, President of Corewell Health Southeast Michigan, said that the incident did result in delays for some scheduled procedures.
