A group of 12 middle school students helped stop a woman from committing suicide.

On Thursday, a boys volleyball team from Fresno, California, stumbled upon a woman about to jump off the Tuolumne Street Bridge, preparing to jump 100 feet to her death onto railroad tracks below, ABC 7 reports.

The team of sixth, seventh and eighth graders were on a jog for practice.

“She was like, one hand, and feet hanging already,” said Brandy Ezell, one of the students involved.

When they encountered the woman, they notified their coach, who sprung into action: “They told me there’s a lady trying to jump off the bridge,” Murray said. “I immediately told the kids, ‘Do everything you can, chant, say, ‘Stop, your life is worth it,’ and they just kept on chanting.”

The team spent 10 minutes with the woman, who eventually removed herself from the edge of the bridge, until emergency services arrived. Fresno police said the 47-year-old woman was placed on a 72-hour mental health hold and evaluation.

The boys and Murray feel as though they are the reason she is still alive. “She took a glance and hearing those kids, it registered to her, ‘I can’t do this in front of them,'” said Murray.
