Democratic presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg plans to double his already massive nationwide TV-advertising budget — an ambitious effort to cash in on the chaotic Iowa caucus.
The 77-year-old business tycoon — who has already spent $314 million of his own fortune on broadcast television, cable and digital advertising — is hoping to capitalize on the extensive delay in naming a winner of Monday night’s crucial contest.
“I think where there is no one clear winner it gives us the opportunity to get the message out, and we’re going to take the opportunity,” Bloomberg told Reuters on Tuesday.
An aide said the campaign will also expand its staff to more than 2,100 people nationwide.
The former New York City mayor is skipping early voting states, like New Hampshire, and is instead traveling to California — which has 10 times as many delegates than Iowa — and swing states like Michigan and Pennsylvania.
His strategy has been criticized by some who claim he is using his largess to gain an advantage.
