Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to donate $1 million to Frontier Fairness, a PAC supporting Democrat Mike Johnston for governor in Colorado, according to the ColoradoPolitics Web site.
Both Bloomberg and Johnston support tougher gun laws, and the former mayor is a co-founder of Everytown for Gun Safety and Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
“Mike Johnston stands out as an extremely effective leader in reducing gun violence,” Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser told the site. “We need people like him in office now more than ever to push for common-sense gun-safety measures.”
Terrance Carroll, a former Colorado House speaker and co-chair of the PAC, welcomed Bloomberg’s financial help.
“As state senator, Johnston worked tirelessly to reduce gun violence and keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands,” Carroll said.
“He has stood up to the NRA and will continue to do so when he is elected governor of Colorado.”
Johnston faces several opponents for the nomination, and Republicans are also expecting a contested primary.
