Minnesota will hold a memorial service for George Floyd on Thursday, the state’s governor said Monday.

“It will be an important event both for the city of Minneapolis and Minnesota and for the nation to watch that process of celebrating a life that was taken in front of us, an opportunity for leadership,” Gov. Tim Walz said at a press conference.

Floyd died after a white cop kneeled on his neck for nearly 9 minutes as he cried, “I can’t breathe!” during a routine arrest May 25. The death of Floyd, who was black, has caused widespread rioting across the country.

Officials have said Floyd will be buried in his home state of Texas.
