Mississippi voted Tuesday to replace its state flag — which features the Confederate stars and bars — with a new flower-centric design.
With 67 percent of precincts in the state reporting, the measure passed with roughly 70 percent of voters approving the new design, and roughly 30 percent rejecting it.
The state new flag includes a white magnolia — Mississippi’s state flower — encircled by stars and words “In God We Trust” on a dark blue background.
“This will be the new state flag of Mississippi. Voters overwhelmingly approved it. This is a great day for the state as we move forward from a divisive emblem that now rests in the past,” tweeted one resident, Sam Hall.
The new flag design also features single star made of diamonds, which represents Native Americans who lived on the state before settlers arrived.
