A Missouri teen died over the weekend after he got swept into a ditch during a raging flash flood, according to authorities and a new report.
The teen, identified by the Springfield News-Leader as John Wheeler, 13, was walking by the surging water in Joplin just before 9 a.m. Saturday when he slipped and was pulled away by the current, the Joplin Police Department said in a statement.
At some point, the waters sent the local eighth-grader tumbling into a drainage ditch, the News-Leader reported.
Officers found John in the area of a low-water bridge and tried to save him, according to police.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.
Joplin police, along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, are investigating John’s death.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share with you that one of our 8th Grade students died today in flash flood waters,” the Carl Junction school district tweeted Saturday. “Please keep this young man’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. As more details are available, we will share them by email and phone calls to parents.”
