MADRID — A Slovakian model went on trial in southern Spain on Monday charged with the fatal shooting two years ago of her ex-boyfriend, a British millionaire.

Prosecutors are seeking a 20-year sentence for Mayka Marica Kukucova for killing Andrew Bush at his home in the beach resort of Estepona on April 5, 2014.

The jury trial of the 26-year-old model started Monday and is expected to last at least three days.

She was the former girlfriend of Bush, 48, who owned a jewelry store in Britain before moving to Spain. Prosecutors have said Kukucova shot him three times, a month after the couple broke up, when he returned home with a Russian girlfriend.

Kukucova’s lawyer says his client acted in self-defense after Bush confronted her with a gun, the two struggled and it went off, according to the Diario Sur newspaper.

Bush’s sister and niece were present in the courtroom, as well as Kukucova’s parents.

The Russian woman, Maria Korotaeva, was also there.
