A Virginia woman and her boyfriend were arrested Wednesday after her 3-year-old daughter was found dead in a river near their home, police said.

Kimberly Dawn Moore, 45, and her boyfriend, Adrian Neil Puckett, reported her daughter, Josie Burleson, missing soon before 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Wythe County, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

They told police Josie was playing on a trail near a river nearby a home they were visiting, authorities said.

More than 100 searchers from several law-enforcement agencies turned up to look for the missing girl, who was found dead in the river at about 1 a.m., cops said.

Moore and Puckett were arrested Wednesday and hit with child neglect with reckless disregard for life and child endangerment charges, police said.

More charges against the couple were pending Wednesday evening, and police are still investigating the girl’s death.
