An Alabama mom has been charged with manslaughter after her newborn’s body was found in her trunk during a traffic stop, authorities said.

Jalesa Gaines, of McIntosh, was indicted Wednesday in the death of her baby boy, news station WALA reported.

Officers discovered the newborn’s body in the 23-year-old woman’s trunk when she was pulled over Nov. 14 in Jackson for an expired tag, according to the report.

The baby, who was born Nov. 9, was allegedly found in a box wrapped in a sweater.

Investigators said the woman showed some remorse but “not to the degree we’d expect,” according to WALA.

Officials said the baby was not stillborn. Results of an autopsy to determine his cause of death have not yet been released.
