Monica Lewinsky said she has “complicated feelings” about the death of Ken Starr, the former special counsel whose investigation revealed her torrid affair with then-President Bill Clinton — but she acknowledged it was a “painful loss” for his loved ones.

“[A]s I’m sure many can understand, my thoughts about ken starr bring up complicated feelings…,” Lewinsky wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

“But of more importance, is that I imagine it’s a painful loss for those who love him.”

Lewinsky, 49, was a 24-year-old White House intern when Starr’s investigation exposed her affair with Clinton in 1998. She is now a self-styled anti-bullying activist who writes and speaks about living in the aftermath of public humiliation.

In a 2014 Vanity Fair exclusive, Lewinsky placed part of the blame for her trauma on Starr, whose lawyers she said initially discouraged her from contacting her attorney and threatened her with a lengthy jail sentence.

In 2018, Lewinsky returned to Vanity Fair to describe an awkward run-in with Starr at a West Village restaurant. Describing the lawyer as “somewhere between avuncular and creepy,” she expected an apology, which she did not receive.

When asked about the encounter, Starr said that while he wished Lewinsky “the best,” he would not apologize for the events of the late 1990s.

“Her life has been disrupted. But the evidence is the evidence,” he said.

Despite her initial gracious response to Starr’s passing, Lewinsky later noted that her “complicated feelings” ran deep. When political consultant Philippe Reines joked that he would “love to see the first draft” of her diplomatic tweet, Lewinsky responded that “therapy next week will be … interesting.”
