A Montana tribal councilwoman was assaulted and “left for dead” inside a hotel room earlier this month before being found alive by a family member, according to a report and relatives.

The victim, Silver Little Eagle, a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribal council, was attacked, along with a 31-year-old man, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Billings on May 16, USA Today reported, citing police.

Little Eagle was hospitalized after the assault, the report said.

Police have said two women, ages 27 and 25, are persons of interest. As of Tuesday, they were still being sought for questioning, the report said.

Little Eagle’s family, in a May 20 statement posted to Facebook, called for justice for the councilwoman who was elected in 2020.

The councilwoman, according to the statement, was “left for dead,” suffering severe physical injuries.

Little Eagle’s car and personal property were also stolen, but was later found by police, the report said.

Since the attack, “Little Eagle has experienced further threats of violence, cyberbullying, defamation of character, and harassment by the assailants and people in her own community,” her family said in the statement.

Police said they do not believe the crime was racially motivated.
