McLEAN, Va. — Police say a mother and daughter may be the victims of a double murder — not a murder-suicide.

WUSA 9 reported Wednesday that Fairfax County police initially suspected that 23-year-old Helen Hargan had shot her mother, 63-year-old Pamela Hargan, and then turned the gun on herself.

The women died in McLean in July. But a newly unsealed search warrant stated the investigation has “revealed that the scene may have been altered and staged.”

The warrant said there were attempted “fraudulent” wire transfers from the mother’s accounts, including the day after her death. The warrant stated that the transfers “were attempted by Megan Hargan who is another daughter of Pamela Hargan.”

Police have not named a suspect in the case but said it is still a “very active” investigation.
